2008 - BTCC - Rockingham (Round 2)

2008 - BTCC - Rockingham (Round 2)
13th April, 2008
The BTCC moved north to the Northamptonshire circuit of Rockingham, near Corby. The weather was forecast to be changeable, but generally overcast through the race weekend. However, no one would predict quite how the weather would affect the three races. Team 48’s racing debut was again postponed, as the team opted to focus on fine tuning their cars, and enter the BTCC at Donington Park in the next round.

Matt Neal thought he had done enough to secure pole position for the Rockingham races, but was beaten at the death by a fantastic lap from the Honda driver Gordon Shedden. As race one got underway, Shedden moved away well and led into corner one, but it was a shock for Matt Neal who started from second. He was passed by surprise of the weekend, Adam Jones, into the first corner. However, both were surprised to see SEAT’s Darren Turner passing to claim second behind Shedden. Neal re-passed Jones to take third, and the top three began to move clear. During the middle of the race a battle between Tom Chilton and Jason Plato was evolving as the pair entered the first corner Plato went wide and Chilton went tight, but as they went through the corner Plato lost the back end of the car. He managed to catch it, without losing a place. Rain began to fall lightly around the circuit, making some parts slightly tricky as Matt Neal found out into corner one as he overran. Just in front of that battle between Chilton and Plato, another was developing, with championship leaders Fabrizio Giovanardi and Mat Jackson fighting with Tom Onslow-Cole. Giovanardi benefited from contact between the other two, and moved ahead, as Onslow-Cole saved a slide well. A resurgent Matt Neal was now making up for his earlier error, and was mastering the conditions well. He quickly caught Adam Jones, and passed him, as the pair entered the final lap of the race. Mat Jackson passed Tom Onslow-Cole on the final lap, but Matt Neal could not find a way past Darren Turner. The SEAT driver held onto second place on his birthday. The clear winner was Gordon Shedden who never looked back from the start.

Turner made a fast getaway in a dry, but overcast, race two, moving into the lead as the pack moved around the banking into corner one. Both Team RAC BMWs had good starts, as tin-top newcomer Stephen Jelley moved up from eleventh to join the pack fighting for third by they reached the first turn. The safety car was deployed on lap two, to allow marshals to remove Stuart Oliver’s stricken Lexus from the gravel trap. The race distance was extended to 19 laps. On the race restart Turner did well to back the pack up and then made a break for the line, but was surprised to see Giovanardi almost pass him as the pair rounded the banking into corner one. He resisted the charge and held position. Further back, Mat Jackson passed Gordon Shedden, who appeared to be suffering from the additional weight due to success ballast from race one. Giovanardi and Jackson were both hot on the heels of leader Darren Turner, but could not find a way past; until Turner ran wide losing two positions as both followers went through. It went wrong for Giovanardi only a few corners later, as he ran wide. Jackson capitalised to take the lead of the race. As the cars entered the final lap, Jackson was streaking ahead with Giovanardi setting for second to bolster his championship points haul. Darren Turner held on to third despite intense pressure from Gordon Shedden.

Race two winner Mat Jackson drew the random numbered ball to determine the pole sitter for race three, he drew number 8, which meant the top eight were reversed and Adam Jones would start from pole.

The final race of the day was ready to be started, until heavy rain on the grid forced race organisers to stop proceedings and declare a wet race. This allowed the teams some more time to change the cars to wet set-ups. When the race started, Colin Turkington and Tom Chilton had good starts, both passing Adam Jones. As the pack rounded the first turn Giovanardi and Plato made contact, but both continued without much time loss. A number of cars were issued with drive-through time penalties, the main one being Jason Plato. The penalty was issued as mechanics were working on his car within the three minute period before the warm-up laps are run. Tom Onslow-Cole became the first of the front-runners to succumb to the treacherous conditions, as he spun out in the gravel trap. Darren Turner soon followed him, as Mat Jackson, Adam Jones and Gordon Shedden were fighting well, even in the atrocious conditions. The safety car was deployed on lap twelve when John George went off as he moved off line to allow Mat Jackson to lap him. The safety car played into Jason Plato’s hands, as he could make up time to the pack after his time penalty visit to the pit lane. The front-runners Turkington and Chilton were enjoying a battle for the lead as both went off but quickly rejoined. Mat Jackson’s weekend ended with him parked in the gravel. Aside from the gravel traps being used overtime, the focal point was a very determined Matt Neal. He was scything through the pack with ease, as he took a firm grasp on the wet conditions. Neal then passed Chilton, and moved up behind Colin Turkington. Try as he may, he could not pass until the pair reached the final bend onto the banking. Neal took the brave low line, and made the move stick. As the final lap began, Turkington was in second, but he let it all slip away, as he finished in a lowly seventh place following numerous incidents. Matt Neal crossed the line to take a deserved maiden victory for the VX Racing team, followed by Tom Chilton and Adam Jones.

The next round of the BTCC will be held at Donington Park, on the 3rd and 4th of May 2008.
