2008 - BTCC - Knockhill (Round 8)

2008 - BTCC - Knockhill (Round 8)
17th August, 2008
Farbrizio Giovanardi went to Knockhill in Scotland, with a 44-point advantage over SEAT driver Jason Plato. Giovanardi's aim was to finish in the points, as often, and as high as possible, but without taking any risks, and also hope that the support from his team mates – former double British Touring Car Champion Matt Neal, and relative BTCC new boy Tom Onslow-Cole, would be strong and consistent.

Qualifying saw the SEATs take the top two spots on the grid, with Darren Turner sitting on pole. Team Halfords driver Tom Chilton had qualified in third, but was moved back six places on the grid as a result of penalty issued at the Oulton Park round.

The first race was perfect for Jason Plato, as he leapfrogged Turner off the line. Turner endured a bad start, as VX Racing's Tom Onslow-Cole also moved past, but the pair would battle through the first corners, and racing contact resulted in Turner heading to the gravel, he rejoined some way back. The safety car was deployed twice, firstly after an incident involving Martyn Bell and Chris Stockton, which saw Bell's car hit the wall. He walked away from the accident. The second safety car was sent out after two separate accidents at the same. Both Jason Hughes, and local driver Michael Doyle left the track and hit the wall. Both drivers were unharmed. Immediately after both safety car periods, Plato managed the restart well, but was put under pressure by an inspired Tom Onslow-Cole, who enjoyed a very good race. His teammates were suffering from mixed fortunes, with Matt Neal heading to the pits after the first safety car, due to suffering a puncture on the restart, whereas Giovanardi was moving well through the field from his starting place of seventh. Promising youngster Andrew Jordan was again putting on a show of excellent driving. He qualified in ninth, and enjoyed an intense battle with Rob Collard and Adam Jones. Jordan finished the race where he had started, but the maturity of his drive was evident. Tom Onslow-Cole played perfect teammate to Giovanardi, as he let the Italian past him to take second. Onslow-Cole had a fantastic race, but accepted that Giovanardi should be let through to bolster his chances of retaining the BTCC crown. Plato took the chequered flag, but the joy was soured after seeing that his main rival, Giovanardi, was right behind him in second. Onslow-Cole crossed the line in third place, for yet another podium.

The second race of the day was largely uneventful. Jason Plato made a good start and never looked back as he led from lights to flag. Mat Jackson had a fantastic start, as he jumped up from sixth to fourth, and tried to pass Tom Onslow-Cole, but the VX Racing driver held his position. Fabrizio Giovanardi pushed Plato for sometime, but could not find a way past, and he was sensibly not taking any chances. Local boy Gordon Shedden made the pass of the round, as he cut back on Mat Jackson into the hairpin to take fourth. Darren Turner moved up through the field as he passed Andrew Jordan and Rob Collard amongst others to claim eighth place from eighteenth on the grid. Jason Plato took the chequered flag, and was again followed by the Vauxhall pair of Giovanardi and Onslow-Cole.

Jason Plato drew ball number nine, which gifted Andrew Jordan another pole position under the reverse grid rules.

Jordan was hampered with a lot of wheel spin off the line, and he slipped down to third as Darren Turner moved into the lead. Rob Collard followed Turner through and pressured the SEAT driver for much of the race. The three Vauxhalls were exactly where they wanted to be, in front of Jason Plato, with Matt Neal was moving forward through the field. Plato passed Tom Onslow-Cole, but the youngster soon regained the position. A battle would erupt, as Plato made a strong move into the final hairpin, and Onslow-Cole went wide out of the corner, as he rejoined he made contact with Plato, causing the SEAT driver to spin off into the wall, and out of the race. In an interview Plato classed Onslow-Cole as a “...prat...”, but from footage it seemed to be nothing more than a racing incident, of the same ilk that Plato himself has been on the fortunate end of so many times in his touring car career. The safety car was sent out to allow the marshals to deal with the stricken SEAT of Plato. Soon after the restart, Andrew Jordan began to pile some pressure onto Rob Collard but it was to no avail. Another Vauxhall in the wars was that of Matt Neal, as he fought intensely with the Team Halfords car of Gordon Shedden, the pair made contact but continued. The incident closed the pack up with the battling trio of Colin Turkington, Fabrizio Giovanardi and Mat Jackson joining Neal and Shedden. More contact between Shedden and Neal saw them take to the grass at the chicane, both continued but they lost positions. Mat Jackson profited from the mayhem as he moved up into fourth, with Giovanardi following him into fifth. Turner took the win, to make it three-out-of-three for SEAT. Rob Collard took a fine second place for Motorbase, and Andrew Jordan took third in the John Guest Racing/Team Eurotech Honda Integra.

The round saw Plato make a gain of three points on Giovanardi, but with only two rounds remaining it seems it will be an uphill struggle for the SEAT driver. The VX Racing pair of Fabrizio Giovanardi and Matt Neal have both been confirmed as entrants in the two V8 Supercar endurance events at Philip Island (12th-24th September) and Bathurst (9th-12th October). Neal will drive a Holden Commodore VE for the Supercheap/Paul Morris Motorsport team, alongside the American NASCAR driver Boris Said. Giovanardi will defect from his Vauxhall ties to drive a Triple8 Engineering prepared Ford Falcon BF alongside Johnny McIntyre for the Philip Island event, and Alex Davison for Bathurst.

The penultimate round of the 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship will be held at Silverstone in Northamptonshire from the 30th to 31st August 2008.
