The Superleague Formula championship season was still closely fought as the series moved to Italy for the fifth round. Two of the biggest names, and biggest rivalries, in football AS Roma and AC Milan would now be doing battle on the race track in Italy itself, and this would certainly draw huge interest.
However, it was Liverpool FC's Adrian Valles who struck first as he breezed through the shoot-out to take pole position for the first race. His pace would not help him in the race though. He led early on, but dropped back after pit stop problems. Then bad turned to worse as the car suffered fuel pressure problems on the final lap and he dropped to 9th place. Beijing's Italian driver Davide Rigon claimed victory, in a result which meant a lot to both the driver and the club he was representing. Rigon won on home soil, and his emotions showed what it meant to him as he stood on the podium. As for Beijing, it further pushed them towards the championship. The remaining two steps of the podium all had an Italian influence with Robert Doornbos representing Italian giants AC Milan in second, and the Galatasaray SK car driven by Italian Alessandro Pier Guidi in third.
Liverpool managed to claim fourth place in the second race, in an attempt to resurrect their championship assault after disappointment in race one. The race two spoils went to FC Porto, as they claimed their maiden Superleague Formula race victory with Tristan Gommendy at the wheel, with AS Roma's Franck Perera in second and PSV Eindhoven's Yelmer Buurman in third. The best drive of the race, was Davide Rigon who leapt from the back of the pack to finish fifth, and again bolster the championship credentials of Beijing.
The next, and final, race of the 2008 Superleague Formula season is from Jerez in Spain on the 22nd and 23rd of November 2008.
